we're going to bite the bullet and get a digital slr, DH has agreed that its a good idea, he's normally a film slr man, but we have to move with the times.

we'd like to spend no more than say £550, and ideally would get a decent lens with the body for this.

Any recommendations? i know there are a few budding photographers on here

Canon 450D by my OH. Ebay is a brilliant place to look! You can get some fab offers for these on there with a good lense.

I would go to Jessops and try out a couple of brands, see how they feel in his hands, are the buttons too fiddly etc.

I would go either Canon or Nikon.

The Canon 30d is an excellent camera http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-C ... 895&sr=8-1

or a Nikon alternative could be the Nikon D80 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-D80-Digit ... 009&sr=1-3 it is more money but has more MP and a greater focal length on the kit lens.

Or you could go for a cheaper body say Nikon D40 or Canon 400d and then spend the extra on good lenses.

I have the Nikon D40 but that was because of OH's (well, our) budget. Would definitely rate it and would also big up the D80 if it's within your budget.

I bought a Nikon D60 about a month ago and love it and would def recommend it.

I too am looking, and have been for ages-Father Christmas is getting me one

I was undecided between a Canon and Nixon, but the last week or so have been looking at a Sony A200...there was an article in the Guardian last week and it has just won 3 photography awards...

Its £242 on Amazon, with £30 cashback from Sony. It hs an 18m-70mm lens. This will leave me money to buy the biger lens 18-300mm lens for what I would of paid for a Canon.

I have a Sony Cybershot compact, and have taen some cracking photos with it, so am a big fan of Sony.

Have a look and see what you think...
